To call Club d’Elf a “groove band” understates their depth and breadth. These inventive improvisers — lead by bassist, composer, and sintir player Mike Rivard — draw from a broad range of international rhythms, including “jazz, hip hop, electronica, avant garde, prog-rock, and dub,” and especially Moroccan trance music. The new album You Never Know covers Gnawa music, Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Moroccan band Nass el-Ghiwane, and Frank Zappa, as well as Rivard originals. So yes, great grooves, but enhanced by a whole lot more. – Jon Garelick
